Argentine Tango Laboratory in Bilbao
Advanced level

Argentine Tango Laboratory in Deusto

What is TangoLab?

It is a new concept exclusively for dance couples.

In this class, we will explore various ideas related to technique, body biomechanics, and figures. The goal, however, isn't to teach; it's to open the space for collaborative research, improve ourselves as dancers, and expand the possibilities of dance so you can take these ideas and work on them at home or in practice spaces.

Who is TangoLab for?

It's for people who have been dancing tango for many years and feel they have a well-rounded dance, both technically and musically, and also have a well-structured dance in terms of content. We ask that you come as a couple.

Contents of the Tango Laboratory

For an hour and a quarter, the instructors will open a space for exploration of the body, connection, music, and movement. At the beginning of each class, we'll provide a guideline that the pairs will explore together. We'll then open the space for sharing ideas, and Borja and Chris will be there to answer questions and further explore the ideas that emerge. The final 15 minutes are for practical exploration and testing the ideas in a more social context.

Examples of guidelines:

  • Taking a step while walking with the focus of energy in different places—the foot, the hip, the chest—and the effect this has on the dynamics and cadence of your stride.

  • Boleos: difference in effect when performing on the 1st and 3rd, or on the 4th and 1st.

  • Practice a movement by varying the cadence of your footstrike: heel to ball of foot, ball of foot first, and the entire foot at once. Investigate the difference in impact.

  • Lapiz vs. enrosque: Investigate the differences in spin and what different movements it can be applied to.

  • Sacadas on 1 vs on 1 and 3.

  • Weight shifts using syncopation.

The Tangolab Teachers

Borja Alkalde and Christina Gómez have each been dancing tango for 16 years and have been professional tango partners for 10 years, teaching classes throughout Europe, at tango events, and in their own tango studios in Bilbao. They have studied with great mestros of Argentine tango and have competed in championships around Europe, both in Tango de Pista (social and improvised tango) and Tango Escenario (choreographed show tango). More than anything, they simply love tango and are happy to be able to work in the service of this incredible dance.
